In 2020, COVID-19 changed the world as we knew it. But like the turtles we strive to protect, Turtle Survival Alliance adapted—evolving with the shifts in our social dynamics. That spring and early summer, we reached thousands of viewers through a dozen engaging webinars and significantly expanded our presence on social media, connecting with new audiences around the world—all while our vital fieldwork pressed forward, advancing turtle conservation where it matters most.
At the same time, this digital awakening coincided with another seasonal surge: for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this time of year also marks heightened activity for turtles.
In 2021, building on that momentum and evolution, Turtle Survival Alliance proudly launched Turtle Month—a time to spotlight this critical period for turtles and engage our global community in their conservation.
Each year since, Turtle Survival Alliance’s Turtle Month begins with Earth Day on April 22 and culminates with World Turtle Day® on May 23. We invite you to join us in this annual month-long celebration of turtles and tortoises and the dedicated people working to protect them.

World Turtle Day® was begun by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle. The day was created as a yearly observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
