Asian Black Giant Tortoise
Positive impacts for more than half of the country’s turtle and tortoise species
The Turtle Survival Alliance India partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society India works across the country to research, monitor, and implement conservation initiatives that make a positive impact for more than half of the native turtle and tortoise species. Through TSA’s thought leadership and funding, WCSI convened a series of Indian Turtle Conservation Meetings that led to the identification of five regions for the most effective conservation and management of India’s threatened turtles. In these priority areas, TSA is working to reverse negative population trends for all but two of the Critically Endangered species of turtle inhabiting India. Actions include: monitoring and protecting potential habitats including nesting sites, and vulnerable nests; nest translocation and hatchling head-start; survival and dispersal studies; creating and maintaining breeding and assurance colonies; community outreach; trainings on identification and law enforcement and rehabilitation/ repatriation of confiscated animals.
