Barbour’s Map Turtle

Habitat:

• Subtropical flowing freshwater habitats, including moderately broad alluvial rivers, clear spring-fed streams, mainstream river channels, and calcareous tributaries

Threats:

• Habitat loss and degradation due to dam construction, altered river flow, dredging and channelization
• Reduced water availability from excessive withdrawals
• Riparian deforestation
• Water pollution
• Incidental mortality from illegal fishing gear
• Disease of unknown origin in some populations

Wild Population:

• Stable
• Population small but locally abundant
• Range limited to few rivers
• Some local declines
• Evidence of expansion in select drainages

Conservation Efforts:

• Habitat protection and management
• Integration into river management practices
• Legal protection and enforcement (protected at the state level and federally under the Endangered Species Act due to similarity of appearance)
• Population monitoring and research
• Public outreach and education
